AI has sharply reduced the effort required to build an application. A small team can create interfaces, integrations and automations that previously demanded a substantial budget.
This is good news, but it removes a natural restraint. When building was expensive, organizations were forced to choose. When almost every idea can become software, the risk is that almost every idea does.
Creation cost is not ownership cost
The first version is only a small part of a system’s life. Data structures change. Providers update interfaces. Security requirements evolve. Users discover exceptions. Someone must understand the application when its original maker is unavailable.
Cheap construction can therefore produce expensive dependence.
Complexity hides between applications
One small tool rarely appears dangerous. The problem emerges when dozens copy the same data, use different identities and implement their own logic. No one sees the complete chain from source to decision.
An error in one component travels into reports and actions elsewhere. Removing a tool becomes difficult because its dependencies were never documented.
A discipline of deliberate simplicity
Before building, ask:
- Does this capability strengthen a strategic difference?
- Can an existing service solve the non distinctive part?
- Which shared components should it reuse?
- Who owns operation, data and future change?
- Can the organization remove it safely?
The final question is important. Reversibility is a quality attribute in a rapidly changing environment.
Build a platform, not a pile
Shared identity, permissions, knowledge, task orchestration and logging reduce the amount each new solution must own. Teams can innovate at the edge while the organization retains a coherent core.
Convene AI OS provides this common operational foundation. New agents and workflows can reuse governance instead of duplicating it.
Simplicity is strategic capacity
A simpler landscape is easier to understand, secure and change. It allows leaders to replace models, alter processes and stop experiments without destabilizing the organization.
As software becomes easier to create, the ability to decide what not to build becomes a defining management capability.
