Management has long coordinated work by assigning tasks, monitoring progress and resolving exceptions. AI agents can increasingly perform parts of this coordination themselves. They can plan, delegate, search for information and report results.
This does not remove management. It changes its object. Leaders must design the conditions under which autonomy creates value.
Autonomy is not an on or off setting
An agent may draft but not send, recommend but not decide, or act up to a financial threshold. Autonomy consists of many bounded permissions rather than one broad authorization.
The right level depends on consequence, reversibility, uncertainty and available evidence.
Four design responsibilities
Define outcomes
Agents need objectives that express value, quality and constraints. Optimizing one metric without context can produce undesirable behavior.
Establish boundaries
Access, tools, time, cost and prohibited actions should be explicit. Technical capability must never be confused with organizational mandate.
Create feedback
Leaders need evidence about quality, exceptions, interventions and downstream outcomes. Feedback should improve the agent and the process around it.
Design escalation
An agent must recognize when confidence is insufficient, interests conflict or an action carries greater impact than its mandate allows.
Human judgment moves upstream
When systems handle more execution, human contribution shifts towards framing questions, evaluating ambiguity and deciding what should be optimized. These activities are less visible than task volume but more strategically important.
Managers therefore need AI literacy and the authority to challenge how systems are designed. They cannot outsource the operating model entirely to technology specialists.
Infrastructure makes autonomy governable
Convene AI OS connects agent identity, permissions, tasks, knowledge, approvals and audit evidence. Autonomy can grow gradually as performance becomes demonstrable.
The central management question is no longer only who should do the work. It is which actor may act, within which boundaries, with what evidence and under whose responsibility.
